I am using gc-7.2e, which is what pkgsrc has, and which
  http://www.hboehm.info/gc/
indicates is the latest stable version.  This is with gcc 4.5.3 on i386.

Yes.  libgc seems to have multiple tests.  pkgsrc has the following, and
it runs fine:
