Hi Noah,
Are you interested in mentoring for the SoC this year? We currently
have four proposals, they all look fine, but three of them are for
the CPAN-alike. We need to shake up those students. But if we were to
get more slots -- totally unknown at this point, btw -- we would need
more mentors, and more projects. For example Diogo might be interested
in guile-gnome stuff, and perhaps Paul or Kentarô might be interested in
something else as well. Perhaps you could mentor a CPAN. Dunno.
Basically the deadline for project applications has passed, but students
can still modify their proposals, so actually they can change to totally
different proposals. Anyway. Let me know your thoughts. Copying
guile-devel so this is happening in public; and actually if any
guile-devel reader feels interested in mentoring, and you are active in
Guile, let me know and we can talk about it. But we do have to be
somewhat quick about it.
Cheers,
Andy

Hello,
I would be happy to mentor for SoC! I think it's a great program. I
can also promise that I'll have a lot more time to work on Guile stuff
over the summer than I do now, which should be perfect for SoC. :-)
My only questions are about logistics. Do I have to do any paperwork
or something like that to mentor? Where can I see the proposals and
give feedback? And how many spots does Guile have?
Also, if we have three proposals for CPAN, then certainly two people
should do something else, but how do we decide which two people? Paul
and Diego both posted a list of proposals to the list before settling
on their final one, so I imagine we could ask them to choose a
different one from their list.

Basically what you have to do is to sign up for the
summer-of-code@gnu.org list, and also go to
http://www.google-melange.com/gsoc/org/google/gsoc2011/gnu, and apply to
be a mentor. The number of spots is not decided finally until the 25th
or so.

There are three proposals actually. Anyway we can talk about all that
later; we don't know how many slots there are.
Cheers,
Andy

Done.

Just to remember, the deadline for the proposal review is 22/04, but I
believe it's still possible to change things around if it's the desire
of the project.
I can only speak for myself, but I would say that any of the applicants
would be happy to work things to have the best outcome possible.

It seems that GNU is only getting 10 slots or so this year, with more
than 10 projects and some 50 applications, so Guile will be lucky if it
gets one slot. It is quite difficult, as we did get four good
proposals, yours included; but the thing isn't settled yet, so we'll
have to wait for Monday to announce the results in the end. I'm just
catching up with things now; was on holiday earlier in the week.
Regards,
Andy
