following the instructions in README, I get

Oh, it got stricter about redefinitions within modules I guess.  Maybe
it should be

(if (defined? 'system)
    (begin
      (define guile-core-system system)
      (define-public system
        (lambda (str)
          (let ((st (guile-core-system str)))
            (or (status:exit-val st)
                (+ 128 (or (status:term-sig st)
                           (status:stop-sig st)))))))))
