What you're saying seems to be specific to pkgsrc. Leaving packaging systems aside, instructions in the Guile manual read this: 1. Unpack slib somewhere, e.g., `/usr/local/share/slib'. 2. Create a symlink in the Guile site directory to slib, e.g.,: ln -s /usr/local/share/slib /usr/local/share/guile/site/slib So `(load-from-path "slib/guile.init")' would be consistent with these instructions.
