Hi,

Below I supply a patch against the latest cvs.gnome.org version of
guile-gtk + the file gnome-guile/compat.h. With these changes
guile-gtk should work against any reasonably recent Guile.

Uhh, ohh, Mikael, I'm afraid you come at unfortunate times. Are you
aware of the guile-gtk-1.2 branch? The latest release from that
branch, guile-gtk-1.2-0.31, should already contain most of your
changes for making guile-gtk work with Guile 1.6.0.

Guile-gtk is a total mess right now, unfortunately. Making the mess
was easy, but now I can't find the time to clean it up.

Guile-gtk development has been split into two series: one 'stable'
that tracks Gtk+ 1.2 and Guile 1.6, and a development series that is
busy producing bindings for Gtk+ 2.0, with Ariel as the maintainer.

I didn't want to be bothered with Gtk+ 2.0 and so I created the
guile-gtk-1.2 branch, that I maintain. Also, I moved the project over
to Savannah, but that move is not complete yet.

I think I will just declare the move as complete and pull the old
website.

Mikael, I'm really sorry that this confusion has seemed to trick you
into unnecessary work. Or did you know about all this and it's me
that is confused?

No problem. These are changes that have been in the my tree for long
in order for me to run my applications.

Today I just added the coop-pthreads adaptations because I'd like to
try using them. I thought that maybe some of it could be useful.

Sorry if I didn't take the time to research the "state of the art"
before posting.

Yes. Could you make a new patch against guile-gtk-1.2 from Savannah
once it works for you? I will commit the missing scm_t_key stuff in a
minute and guile-gtk _seems_ to work with coop-pthreads without
changes...

(btw, what about just using glib's thread plugin API?)

Well, yes, if you think that would be useful I can do that.

> I will commit the missing scm_t_key stuff in a minute and guile-gtk

I'm afraid the guile-gtk I worked against only just seems to work.
There were things that needed change.

Regarding the missing scm_t_key stuff: I hope you saw that I committed
a few definitions to coop-pthreads.h which supplements the now
deprecated C level API so that gtk-threads.c works with it?

I guess what you are referring to is then something else than C level
support for thread-specific data? Or have you implemented
thread-specific data without using the pthreads interface? That could
be splightly more efficient, but the question is if it's really worth
it...

> (btw, what about just using glib's thread plugin API?)

That would certainly be a nice option. However, that would rule out
using cooperative thread libraries, like COOP or GNU Portable Threads.

I promised to post a summary of our telephone conversation. I've
actually been write a few words now and then. Perhaps I'll get it out
today.

Best regards,
Mikael

Since I can't really say what will be in that patch, I can't say
whether it will be useful... ;-)

Anyway, I'm sure we will get the thing working.

Yes, I saw it, but too late.

Yes, I did this. I wanted to avoid 'poisening' the thread
implementations with deprecated stuff, but since your solution is _so_
much simple, I scrapped mine.

I don't think so. Simplicity rules in this case, IMO.

Ok, I see.
