I've made installation attempts for guile-1.5.6 on 13+ different UNIX
platforms, with a few successes (GNU/Linux systems), and several
failures, either of the build, or of parts of the test suite. A brief
summary is given below; details, including full build logs, are
available on request. Builds were done with the usual recipe

This is a deliberate error. It indicates that no one has yet worked
out how to build the Boehm GC on MacOS X, or at least, that the
solution is not recorded in Guile's copy of this file.

Someone needs to check the latest status on this. Now that MacOS X
has been out for a while, my guess is that the main Boehm GC sources
will now cover this case.

Fascinating. My guess is that, on this OS, the shell processes "$@"
so that it ends up as a single, empty string argument, even when no
arguments were actually supplied. Could you run your /bin/sh and try
the following lines?

$ set -
$ echo $#
$ set - "$@"
$ echo $#

snarf-check-and-output-texi has since changed so that it accepts any
number of args, but "$@" is part of our standard boilerplate for Guile
scripts, so if it doesn't work, we have an issue ...

Scary libtool issue. If you ignore this problem (by using `make -k'),
does the installed guile work correctly?

In other words, is this a case of `libtool doesn't work at all' on
AIX, or is it only a pre-installation problem?

Curious. Could you try adding these two lines at line 35 of

will hopefully include a backtrace):

These errors are being passed through from the Solaris libc's
implementation of regcomp and regerror - apparently, its regcomp
doesn't handle empty expressions. Perhaps best just documented and
lived with, although we could probably code a workaround on the Scheme
level if we wanted to.

How is putenv's return code documented on Solaris? Looks like putenv
is returning <0, which Guile, perhaps wrongly, interprets as an error.

    Nelson> 	collect2: ld returned 1 exit status

This is odd for two reasons:

- you say 2.8, but the path to ld in the error message says 2.7

- If Guile fails to link, as shown here, how did you get as far as the
  `make check' errors reported above?

Can you throw any extra light on these?

Many thanks again! Hopefully we can nail all of these before 1.5.7.

        Neil

Mr. Beebe reported several problems in his original email.

1. The "regcomp doesn't accept empty strings" bug that has now been
   reported by others as well.

2. The "putenv ("TZ") returns -1" bug that has now been reported by
   others as well.

3. A problem with "$@" not working on Compaq/DEC OSF/1 4.0 and 5.0,
   which means that our standard Guile scripts boilerplate won't work
   on this OS in the case that no arguments are passed.

4. Two problems with the Boehm GC stack-finding code not working, on
   MacOS X and Compaq Alpha OSF/1 5.0.

5. A .so library loading problem on IBM RS/6000 AIX 4.3.

6. The syncase/gensym issue, since fixed in CVS.

7. A stack overflow during guile_filter_doc_snarfage on SGI IRIX 6.5.

8. A build failure on Solaris 2.8.

I copied various followups to bug-guile@gnu.org, but no firm
conclusion was reached on any (except 6). Can you see them there? If
not, I could send them to you privately.

        Neil

I see them, thanks! I get back to this case by case.

I can not reproduce this on Solaris 2.8 with the latest snapshots.
Maybe it only happens because of some peculiar configuration of your
system.

Can you try again with the tarballs from the URL below and send the
full build logs?

    http://krusty.e-technik.uni-dortmund.de/pub/guile/snapshots/

I used these commands

    $ ./configure --prefix /tmp/guile
    $ make
    $ make check
    $ make install
    $ make installcheck
