Hi,

I have the problem that recently AUCTeX started producing spurious
repetitions of output on the console. There does not seem to be a
fixed size to the repeated areas: they can be something like 540, 970,
random numbers like that, probably pretty much a single read's worth.
It is not for long that I have been having those problems. I can't
seem to be able to reproduce it in shell mode easily, however. It may
have something to do with the coding system (which the AUCTeX buffer
inherits from the source file, so it would typically be something like
latin1-unix).

Has anybody else experienced anything weird in connection with process
output recently?

When running M-x grep recently, I got the output duplicated several
times, which happened on a couple of random occasions. At the time I
thought it might have been related to the super-slow grep output bug,
but it sounds pretty close to what you describe.

I made a change on 2004-06-07 which increased the read buffer from 1k to 4k.
I don't see how that could provoke duplicate buffer output, though.

There have been recent changes specific for the MAC port, but that may be
irrelevant in your case?

Another change which may be relevant is this

2004-06-11 Kenichi Handa <handa@m17n.org>

	* coding.c (decode_coding_string): Check CODING_FINISH_INTERRUPT.

Process output handling calls decode_coding_string in such a way that
it may not decode an entire string (leaving further decoding to the
next call). If there is some error in that logic, I think text could
be duplicated.

Well, something's rotten in the state of Denmark, anyway. If you take
a look at the buffer sizes, you'll see that chars is allocated with a
size of carryover+readmax, but it is only ever filled with carryover
old and (readmax-carryover) new characters, for a total of merely
readmax characters. Consequently, I had at one time patched down
either the buffer size or increased the read sizes (don't remember
which it was), but that was later found to cause segmentation faults.
So the change was reverted, but never explained.

I have no clue whether this might be related.

That's a possibility, yes. Another remote one is that it may coincide
with myself changing from gcc-3.3.x to gcc-3.4.1.

That's true. I'll fix that.

Well, I found and fixed a crash related to the way the "carryover"
characters were saved, so that might have been the explanation.

Anybody else using that version ??

Before you made that change, my auctex latex compiles had gotten
really slow. Not pathological like the grep bug, but noticeably
slower than they should have been -- Emacs was using too much CPU. I
thought your change fixed things, but maybe there was still an
underlying bug.

No. gcc 2.95.4 here.

Well, I also had a few times here recently where the output trickled
in one character at a time, with maybe 3 or 4 characters per second,
for maybe half a minute before things caught up again. But since I
also have the replication problem, and all of this is pretty much
nondeterministic, I was not able to nail this down.

Recently Tramp has begun to fail. It does not happen very often, but
occationally. When I inspect the Tramp buffer (which should contain a
lisp form), I can se the syntax is wrong. It may be possibel that a part
is missing or repeated.

preview-latex is a pretty good test case, since it complains (with
some detail) when stuff gets replicated unexpectedly.

It has become pretty much unusable now.

When did "now" begin ?

Can you identify the change that made this fail?

No idea. It has been some time since I last worked on preview-latex,
and I just took it up last week with some new stuff, being
flabberghasted at how bad I must have bungled matters. Until it
became obvious that something else was going on.

I suppose that maybe two months ago or so this probably did still
work. Also, I have not yet received any third party bug reports, and
there are quite a few people around that tend to use recent Emacs CVS
versions in connection with AUCTeX/preview-latex. So it is my guess
that it might have been just some time in the last month or so.

> Can you identify the change that made this fail?

Not yet. I can try a few things, but stuff is not overly conclusive
by now, and I have not ruled out gcc problems before reporting this,
anyway. That's why I wanted to get some feedback first.

Despite of the randomness of the problem, can you provide a test case?

I have a CVS Emacs here checked out on 2004-07-26 and compiled with
gcc 3.3.4. When I issue `C-c C-p C-d' on a file like

\documentclass{article}
\usepackage[displaymath,footnotes]{preview}
\begin{document}
\begin{equation}
   x^2+y^2=z^2
\end{equation}
Text Text Text Text\footnote{foot foot foot foot} Text Text
\end{document}

there aren't any obvious problems. (Tested with `preview-image-type'
set to 'dvi and 'dvipng.)

Use circ.tex as delivered. That typically gives 1-2 problems pretty
often. The problem depends on the size of the file. Using really
large documents with hundreds of images is pretty certain to trigger
it.

Yes, that's it. Even though the very last line would appear to be a
preview-latex internal bug. If you take a look at the run buffer (C-c
C-l) and search for, say, "Snippet 8", you will find that some
passages around the matches are replicated.

It is probably some change in process.c or coding.c in the last month
or so. If you use gcc-3.3.4, at least it does not seem to be
gcc-3.4-related like I feared at first.

Doesn't help.

The error first appears with version 1.431 of process.c.

Could you try to set readmax to 1024 ?

That may break UDP packet receive, but it isn't relevant for this case.

With an otherwise unchanged 1.433 (head), this appears to do the
trick. Now it would just be nice to find out just what error actually
gets triggered here.

Could you also try the following patch (with readmax=4096).

I don't expect it to make a lot of difference, but just to rule out
the obvious...

Sorry for the delay, had to go climbing. The patch does not cure the
problem. The problem still occurs with comparable severity.

However, the following patch cures everything then:

This might explain why the changes in buffer size that I did
previously triggered problems: that way the buffer could get larger
than this threshold of 1024 bytes. It would appear that as soon as
shrink_decoding_region is called via SHRINK_CONVERSION_REGION in
decode-coding-string, things start going haywire.

Good catch!! I hope Handa can explain what's going on here.

Thank you for tracking the problem down to here. I'll check
what's wrong with shrink_conversion_region soon.

After intalling auctex and preview-latex, I tried C-c C-p
C-d on circ.tex (lang. env. is German), but couldn't
reproduce the problem. Attached is the contents of a buffer
shown by C-c C-l.

Even though it has this line:

Preview-LaTeX exited abnormally with code 1 at Tue Aug 3 10:41:49

the buffer circ.tex is shown with lots of preview images. I
found that C-v doesn't work when a image that is taller than
the window height is shown, but it seems that this is a
different bug.

Rats. You have the threshold for the shrinking significantly lower
than readmax in process.c?

Which is normal. I probably should try to weazle around producing
this message since people tend to get surprised by it.

Quite so.

So let us compare our language environments:

Latin-1 language environment

[...]

Character sets:
  ascii: ASCII (ISO646 IRV)
  latin-iso8859-1: Right-Hand Part of Latin Alphabet 1 (ISO/IEC 8859-1): ISO-IR-100.

Coding systems:
  iso-latin-1 (`1' in mode line):
	ISO 2022 based 8-bit encoding for Latin-1 (MIME:ISO-8859-1).
	(alias: iso-latin-1 iso-8859-1 latin-1)

Yes. But, I found that sub-shell runs in en_US.UTF-8 locale
on Fedora even if I invoked Emacs with LANG=de_DE.iso88591.
And, thus, the process coding system is set to utf-8 which
doesn't trigger shrinking.

Anyway, I found a bug in decode_coding_string (incorrect
setting of coding->consumed, and etc), and just installed a
fix. Could you please try with the latest CVS HEAD code?

Could detect nothing wrong now. However, last time I played with
process.c (and got bitten in the process) it took months until
somebody tracked down an obscure case that actually triggered the bug
(probably the one that you fixed now: I reverted my change without
understanding what could have been wrong).

Let's hope for the best this time.
