A friend of mine is having trouble with mutt inside M-x term on Debian
unstable (mutt version 1.5.17+20080114-1+b1). mutt works fine with
xterm so I suspect M-x term.
Sometimes mutt sends a lot of extra spaces at the end of a line. xterm
makes those spaces disappear somehow but M-x term displays them all so
the line wraps. mutt sends the extra spaces frequently enough that the
screen soon gets garbled.
An example line collect with term-start-output-log is attached.

What version of emacs are you using?

This makes the line wrap on an xterm here...
Can you please send a more precise recipe on how to reproduce this?
Preferably starting from emacs -Q
Starting/quitting mutt seems to work just fine here (no idea how to do
more than that with mutt...)
