Could you try the patch I posted as a followup to Bug#6325?
(Available from http://debbugs.gnu.org/cgi/bugreport.cgi?bug=6325 .
You can use the link `mbox' to download the message text containing
the patch.)
It is for another issue on fringe, but might also work for this case.
