It may be that the M-p M-n history for M-! and dired ! have no bridges
between them.  There should be a special keystroke that will one to
yank lines from the other's history list too.

It would be cool if there was a generalized way for different history
variables to share values, either by a variable analogue to defalias
(which would make them identical) or by an inheritance mechanism (kind
of like keymaps).

You're right.  Must have been something I did in
http://jidanni.org/comp/emacs.txt that makes it that way for me.
