The last one is the culprit, I think: you need to set the
_environment_ variable R, not an Emacs variable R. Try this instead:
(setenv "R" "C:/Progra~1/R/R-2.2.1/bin/Rterm.exe")

The name of the variable set in step 5 is inferior-R-program-name, not R.

Hi
I hope some one could help with this.
Emacs-21.3 and R-2.2.1 and ESS-5.2.12 under window2000pro
My emacs looks like this:
(load "C:/emacs-21.3/ess-5.2.12/lisp/ess-site")
(setq R "C:/Progra~1/R/R-2.2.1/bin/Rterm.exe")
I am logged in as a user and not as admin.
I have HOME and R_USER set in the Environment Variables.
M-x R gives
ESS [S ( R ) : Rtrem starting data directory? C:/emacs-21.3/bin/ <RET>
Searching for program: no such file or directory, Rterm
C-x f gives
Find file: C:\emacs-21.3\bin/
I would rather see C:\some-other-path\here
Thanks

just so that I am in line here, what is it looking for? it says data
directory, I don't have a directory named data under C:/Progra~1/R/*
