Disclaimer: I don't know much about Windows.  I think that MIT/GNU
Scheme Edwin uses HOMEDRIVE and HOMEPATH rather than USERPROFILE.  I
noticed that on an NT 3.51 system HOMEDRIVE and HOMEPATH have sane
values but USERPROFILE isn't defined.  On an XP system USERPROFILE is
the same as concatenating HOMEDRIVE and HOMEPATH.

Perhaps we could fall back on using HOMEDRIVE and HOMEPATH if
USERPROFILE doesn't exist or isn't writable ?
