You can rename your current eshell buffer and then open a second
one. For example:

M-x eshell RET

M-x rename-buffer RET *eshell-2* RET

M-x eshell RET


It seems that it is also possible to call `eshell' with a prefix
(`C-u M-x eshell RET') in order to get a new eshell buffer. But I am
not sure whether this feature is new in the CVS version.

C-u M-x eshell

It sure works in my emacs:

GNU Emacs 21.2.1 (i386-mandrake-linux-gnu, X toolkit, Xaw3d scroll bars)

Note that if eshell-rebind is enabled, C-u is taken.  In that case,
you will have to use `M-1 M-x eshell RET'.

What is it used for instead? I actually tried to use C-u in eshell
today (to run a keyboard macro many times) and was annoyed that it did
not work. And of course I use eshell-rebind. :)

C-u (in eshell-rebind and bash) means "erase the current input
line".  And C-w means "erase the last word".
