Subject: Re-Mapping Keys
Date: Tue, 27 Oct 2020 19:13:10 +0100	[thread overview]
Message-ID: <trinity-4ae7d14f-d4ca-43f1-8666-c20678236ea1-1603822389998@3c-app-mailcom-bs01> (raw)

I am trying to re-map keys using xmodmap but got into serious difficulties.

What I want to do is this:

1. Make Ctrl_L, Ctrl_R closest to Space Bar
2. Map Alt_L, Alt_R next to Ctrl_L and Ctrl_R
3. Make Meta be same as Alt
4. Make original position of Alt be Hyper
5. Make Caps_Lock at position of Caps_Lock

This is my new file to implement the changes.

------------------------Xmodmap---------------------------

! Setup for Hyper

clear mod4

keycode 37 = Hyper_L NoSymbol Hyper_L NoSymbol
keycode 105 = Hyper_L NoSymbol Hyper_L NoSymbol

! Set Super Keys to Position of Caps_Lock
 keycode 66 = Super_R NoSymbol Super_R NoSymbol

add mod3 = Super_L Super_R
add mod4 = Hyper_L

! Changes to Ctrl, Alt, and Meta.

clear control
clear mod1
clear mod5

keycode 64 = Control_L NoSymbol Control_L NoSymbol
keycode 108 = Control_R NoSymbol Control_R NoSymbol

keycode 133 = Alt_L Meta_L Alt_L Meta_L
keycode 134 = Alt_L Meta_L Alt_L Meta_L

add control = Control_L Control_R
add mod1 = Alt_L Meta_L
add mod5 = Alt_L Meta_L

------------------------Xmodmap---------------------------

Initially I have got the following settings

xmodmap
xmodmap: up to 4 keys per modifier, (keycodes in parentheses):

shift Shift_L (0x32), Shift_R (0x3e)
lock Caps_Lock (0x42)
control Control_L (0x25), Control_R (0x69)
mod1 Alt_L (0x40), Alt_R (0x6c), Meta_L (0xcd)
mod2 Num_Lock (0x4d)
mod3
mod4 Super_L (0x85), Super_R (0x86), Super_L (0xce), Hyper_L (0xcf)
mod5 ISO_Level3_Shift (0x5c), Mode_switch (0xcb)

xmodmap -pke | grep "Control\|Meta\|Alt\|Super"
keycode 37 = Control_L NoSymbol Control_L
keycode 64 = Alt_L Meta_L Alt_L Meta_L
keycode 105 = Control_R NoSymbol Control_R
keycode 108 = Alt_R Meta_R ISO_Level3_Shift
keycode 133 = Super_L NoSymbol Super_L
keycode 134 = Super_R NoSymbol Super_R
keycode 204 = NoSymbol Alt_L NoSymbol Alt_L
keycode 205 = NoSymbol Meta_L NoSymbol Meta_L
keycode 206 = NoSymbol Super_L NoSymbol Super_L
