At home I use emacs 21.3.1 and when I open Gnus from the menu I don't get
any of the gnu specific icons etc.
At work I also use emacs 21.3.1 but when I open gnus I get gnus specific
icons and it seems that some kind of gnus mode is entered.
Any ideas on how to obtain the gnus version at home that is used at work?

M-x gnus-version RET is your friend.
