I'm using

                            ;; "%f"
                            mode-line-buffer-identification

;;;                                 mode-line-abbreviation-alist
;;;                                 (car mode-line-buffer-identification)))
                            "%b")))

  (This may or may not be dependent on mode-line.el which provides
   meaningful buffer names.)
