I'm using GNU Emacs 21.2.1 (from Debian package "emacs21"). Is the
included allout.el fully functional? I'm having trouble using it.
Here are some issues I'm running into:

- outline-presentation-padding: this customization seems to have
absolutely no effect on the padding displayed; I always get 1 space
of padding difference between items on consecutive depth levels.

- outline-shift-in seems to only add a single space of padding; I
would have thought that it would also update the bullet to the
correct one for the new depth level. Is this normal operation?

- some of the bindings are different from what's listed in the info
  documentation

Are there any other/better outlining modes/packages which would allow
me to edit space-padded hierarchies of lists in Emacs?

Apparently I must have magically resolved one problem, that of
rebulleting. The rebulleting works fine now when I shift an item.
The padding one though still has me stumped.
outline-presentation-padding is not even mentioned anywhere else in
allout.el, except for the customization variable declaration.

And this brings to mind one other question about allout.el:

- how can one shift-in/-out more than one subtree at a time? I would
like to shift-in 3 sibling itmes/subtrees; currently I do it by
doing C-c > on each one.
