I thought the change to dash was to avoid vulnerabilities like shellshock...? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shellshock_(software_bug) (I only found out about the existence of dash when I checked my debian machines for shellshock vulnerability (and to my relief found that /bin/sh wasn't bash at all...))
