I did test that, yes.

In the latest CVS, I can't reproduce any problem. I tried with a
recentf file containing a mixture of existing and non-existing remote
and local files. (Previously, I did see your problem with remote
files).

Please try to narrow down your ~/.recentf file to the minimum needed
to cause the problem, then post it here if you don't mind.
