stock fedora, stock emacs-21.3, "./compile; make" segfaults in loadup dump

On my stock install of Fedora Test3, I downloaded stock emacs-21.3 and
ran "./compile; make".  The make doesn't complete because of a
segfault:

  ...  <snip>
  LC_ALL=C ./temacs -batch -l loadup dump
  Loading loadup (source)...
  Using load-path (/home/build/emacs-21.3/lisp)

  ...  <snip> ...

  Finding pointers to doc strings...done
  Wrote /home/build/emacs-21.3/lib-src/fns-21.3.1.el
  Dumping under names emacs and emacs-21.3.1
  make[1]: *** [emacs] Segmentation fault
  make[1]: *** Deleting file `emacs'
  make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/build/emacs-21.3/src'
  make: *** [src] Error 2
  [root@localhost emacs-21.3]# uname -a
  Linux localhost.localdomain 2.4.22-1.2088.nptl #1 Thu Oct 9 20:21:24
  EDT 2003 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
  [root@localhost emacs-21.3]# rpm -q binutils
  binutils-2.14.90.0.6-3
  [root@localhost emacs-21.3]# rpm -q gcc
  gcc-3.3.1-6
  [root@localhost emacs-21.3]# 

Any suggestions?
