Subject: superscript without base

Hi all,
quick question: What is the syntax of superscripts without a 'base
character'?
I tried to use ^{foo} and {}^{foo} which both do not produce what I
expect in the latex export.
\nbsp^{foo} comes close.
Best,
Andreas
