The "Def" text in the minibuffer (which indicates a "macro recording
session") should disappear just after typing C-g, but I observe that it
doesn't disappear until I move point to a different line.
In GNU Emacs 24.4.50.1 (i686-pc-mingw32)
of 2014-05-26 on LEG570

Not even then if you disable line-number-mode. Nothing triggers a
mode-line update.
