TAGS documentation

Could someone suggest what I need to install/make to get TAGS
documentation in my Emacs info?

As my crystal ball went on strike today, could you please explain what
is ``TAGS documentation'' and what is ``your Emacs info''?

TAGS as in "tags". etags. Code cross referencing. The TAGS section is
in some online gnu emacs documentation but not on my live system.

You mean, your Emacs on-line manual doesn't have a node named "Tags"?
That is, the following sequence of commands:

     C-h i d m emacs RET g Tags RET

spits out some error message instead of getting you to the description
of tags tables and associated commands and features?  If so, you need
to fix your installation of the Emacs manual, because what you want is
an integral part of it.

What Search command should find it from the top index level?

In Info manuals, never use search commands -- they are for sissies. ;-)
Instead, use the index search feature of Info.  Any well-written Info
manual should have an index which will get you to the description of
every important concept quickly and efficiently.  In this case, the
command "i tags RET" inside the Emacs manual will land you on the
above spot (this is how I found the node when answering your question,
btw).

The `i' command is the way to use an Info manual as a reference (as
opposed to just reading through it, which is typical of the first time
you learn to use a program).

Well, here is the funny thing and why I looked so stupid asking the
original question.

"i" does nothing at the top level.

Foolishly (or maybe not so) I assumed there would be a "top level"
search for all "info" sections available from the the "info" index in
emacs.

After all, how am I, or anyone else. to know that "tags" is part of
"emacs" as opposed to, say " cc-mode?

If you get my meaning.

But when I used the `i' command in the Info directory (where the `d' led me
to), I got following message:
The Info directory node has no index; use m to select a manual

so it seems an `m' command is inevitable.

Exactly. So is there are way to search all manuals without doing an "m" first?

Yes, "M-x info-apropos RET".

But I don't recommend this, unless you _really_ don't know in which
manual to look.  It is much better (faster) to go to the right manual,
and then use `i' there.

Neither does Search.

I assumed that you were already in the Emacs manual, that's why I
didn't mention that you need to select a manual.

I see - yes, bad of me . I wasn't clear. I had meant "all info available
in emacs".

Thanks for the info-apropos, but I see why you don't really recommend it
either.
