hi, all.
i want to prefix lines in a region (the interior body lines of an
outline item) with multiple images (constituting the graphical "guide
lines" of the outline structure). i want the images to not be part of
the saved text, so using the before-string overlay property seems like
the right thing. it looks like i have to use multiple overlays, each
with a single image, because i don't see any way to put multiple
images in a single image specification. is that so?
using multiple overlays at the same point is quite doable, but thought
i'd ask first, to try to reduce the number of separate entities to
manage.
thanks for any info, whether that's some alternative i missed or
confirmation that there is no better way...

I think this will work:
Say, you need three images, use a 3-char before string and put
an display/image property on each of those chars.

Note that if the 3 images are the same, you have that the value of the
`display' property is not `eq'ual for all 3 chars, otherwise Emacs will
think it's a single image that covers 3 chars.
