this probably means that the certificate offered by the SMTP server is
invalid. However, smtpmail should detect this, and try to proceed
without encryption if this happens. I'll try to fix that if you can
give me a backtrace.
In the meantime (as a workaround), if you
(setq smtpmail-stream-type 'plain)
then you should be able to send email again.
