In calc-2.02f, many initial settings are stored in the list
`calc-mode-var-list', apparently so that functions which want to
access all the settings (to reset them or to store them) can easily
access them. (The list is used by the functions `calc-reset' in
"calc-ext.el", by `calc-embedded-set-modes' in "calc-embed.el", and
by 'calc-save-modes' and `calc-setting-file-name' in "calc-mode.el".)
After the list 'calc-mode-var-list' is defined, the unbound variables
are bound with a mapcar.
In calc-2.02g, the initial settings are defined individually, with
defvar, so `calc-mode-var-list' isn't used. The only advantage this
seems to have is to add docstrings to the variables, but the functions
which want to access all the variables conveniently through
`calc-mode-var-list' can't us it anymore. So all the functions I
mentioned above are broken.
I sent the following patches to Lukasz Stafiniak, the Calc
maintainer. He doesn't have emacs cvs access, so he suggested I send
them to the emacs-devel list. It restores a version of
'calc-mode-var-list' which has adds docstrings. This version will
affect `calc-embedded-set-modes' in calc-embed.el, so there is also a
patch for that which will restore the previous behavior.
So, here they are.

BTW, the patches you sent are screwed up; apparently your mail client or
something is removing `extraneous' whitespace, which is in fact required
for patch. The most obvious symptom is that all lines in a context-diff
have at least two characters, so an unchanged empty lines should be
represented by two spaces, but in your message, the spaces are removed.
Thanks,
-Miles

.Numeric stability is probably not all that important when you're guessing.

Sorry about that. (The mail client is cvs gnus; maybe I shouldn't
use so much software from cvs.)
Here are the patches gzipped.

Must be the "or something" alternative. Gnus doesn't delete
whitespace, neither from inline text, nor from text/x-patch
attachments, AFAICS. See <URL:nntp://news.gmane.org/gmane.test/1035>
or <news:v9llr4w66m.fsf@marauder.physik.uni-ulm.de> for a test. And I
couldn't find anything related in the Gnus sources. Maybe have some
add function in some hook?
Bye, Reiner.

Well, I meant message, of course, but for me some whitespace is
deleted. I tried it with my current setup, then with
emacs -q --no-site-file
and then
emacs -q --no-site-file
with emacs 21.3.
In all cases, both in attachments and in typed in text, lines that
contained only a few spaces were replaced by lines with no spaces. I
used message-mail and attached attachments with C-cC-a.
Perhaps something happens to it after it leaves here that deletes the
whitespace.
Jay
