Subject: gnus fails to open nntp server every other time
Date: Sat, 05 Oct 2002 00:17:40 GMT	[thread overview]
Message-ID: <m33crlwxdq.fsf@localhost.localdomain> (raw)

Hi:

using gnus 5.9.0 on linux (RH 7.3 kernel 2.4.18-10)

From the group buffer, when I hit "G" to check for new news and mail,
on odd-numbered tries, it succeeds, and even numbered tries, it
fails.

The difference is that on the failures, it doesn't try to connect to
the news server -- I think gnus believes it's already connected.

I've advised gnus-group-get-new-news to show existing buffers
and do a netstat before running, and to put the output in the
*Messages* buffer.

It looks like for failures, netstat shows an established socket to the
news server, and there's a leftover buffer:
#<buffer *server netnews.attbi.com nntp *nntpd**>

Also, there's no message:
Opening nntp server on netnews.attbi.com...

Instead, it just jumps straight to:
Reading active file from netnews.attbi.com via nntp...
where the debugger starts.

Anyone have any ideas on why this is happening, and how I can stop it?

Thanks.
