Greetings,

    I apologize for what is probably a trivial question, but I have
not been able to figure this out...

    I would like to customize the font, background color, and
geometry of my emacs window.  I know how to do this under
Unix with a .emacs file.  How is this done under Windows (XP)?

You do it in exactly the same way -- open your .emacs file with 
`C-x C-f ~/.emacs' and you're ready.  

There are few things which are different on ms-windows, see the FAQ for
