Hi all,
I suspect this has something to do with font faces, however when I
start mu4e on emacs 27.2, I cannot see the quick jump keys: they are
replaced with an asterisk, so that the whole screen is as follows:

* mu4e - mu for emacs version 0.9.9.5 C

  Basics

        * [*]ump to some maildir
        * enter a [*]earch query
        * [*]ompose a new message

  Bookmarks

        * [* ] Unread messages
        * [* ] Today's messages
        * [* ] Last 7 days
        * [* ] Messages with images

You can see, for example, that the first entry is "[*]ump to some
maildir" instead of "[j]ump to some maildir".
Anyone has a suggestion?

Thanks,
Luca

Well, j is not some weird unicode character which might be missing from
all available fonts and even then you'd usually get a box character
instead of an asterisk.

The very first thing I'd try is updating to a recent mu(4e) version. Mu
0.9.9.5 is from 2013, the current release from 5 days ago is 1.6.6. How
did you get that ancient version?

Bye,
Tassilo

If it is font faces, have you tried moving point to the place
where it should be the bookmark jump keys, do `C-u C-x =` and
inspect the result?

1. This version was released in 2013; latest stable version is 1.6.6!
2. There is a mailing list for mu(4e). Unfortunately it's hosted at
Google. :( https://groups.google.com/g/mu-discuss

(At the moment I only use mu for indexing and searching e-mails; my
main MUA is Wanderlust.)

I somehow downloaded from
<https://www.djcbsoftware.nl/code/mu/mu4e.html>, since it is not
available on my Fedora repositories and I cannot install via emacs
package manager.
Is there a better way, I suspect, to get an updated version, could you
please suggest it?

Luca

I would say the github project is the authoritative source. Stick to the
1.6.* version as it's the stable one.

The problem is that the 1.6 version requires gmime-3 that is not (for
me) so simple to find and install on centos 7.
Suggestions are welcome!

I don't know CentOS and cannot even google a package database for it.
pgks.org indeed lists gmime-2.6 as latest version for CentOS 7.

But centos.org suggest there're also CentOS 8, and 9 and there are two
variants CentOS Linux and CentOS Stream where the former is mostly
deprecated and the latter intends to be more up-to-date. Have a look at
https://centos.org/cl-vs-cs/.
