Same Situation here ...
I also tried the following commands (in the Emacs 23 source dir):
$ cvs update # as of 7th November 2009
$./configure --with-ns CC='gcc -arch i386'
$ make bootstrap
...
...
...
Loading minibuffer...
Loading button...
Loading startup...
Invalid function: "/Users/anupam/code/emacs/emacs23/lisp/startup.elc"
make[1]: *** [bootstrap-emacs] Error 255
make: *** [src] Error 2
Finally failure at end of the bootstrap.
