I wouldn't even mind there being two build flavors, if each were actively maintained; but barring that, I'd prefer something that comes with a maintainer. It used to be the case in 24.x that the NS port was unusable in some ways (poor sub-process communication made working with GDB untenable, for example), and as such, Mac Port was something of a necessity.
