Okay, that must be the problem.  I did an

(add-to-list 'load-path "/pkg/gnus/lisp")

at the beginning of my Gnus init file, where /pkg/gnus is where I'd kept
the Git version.  I also had

(setq gnus-sort-threads-recursively nil)

(setq gnus-thread-sort-functions
      '(gnus-thread-sort-by-number (not gnus-thread-sort-by-date)))

in my Gnus init file.  I'll try again and get back.
