and the precise symptoms of the bug:

My setup is Redhat Linux 8.

Attempting to build todays cvs emacs:
First ran ./configure.. with no errors

make bootstrap ends like this:
[...]

  Compiling /usr/local/src/cvs/emacs/lisp/progmodes/cc-mode.el
