I had to configure, make the build blind to image
file formats not knowing how to tell it where to
find the missing library. For example, I have
libjpeg due to

Port jpeg contains:

  /opt/local/include/jpeglib.h
  /opt/local/lib/libjpeg.9.dylib
  /opt/local/lib/libjpeg.a
  /opt/local/lib/libjpeg.dylib
  … [snip]
-- quote ends

  LIBJPEG="/opt/local/lib" configure

That doesn't do the trick.
