It doesn't seem to have fixed the problem.  I can reproduce the crash in
the same way using revision b1a765b.

I tried M-x image-dired, which I thought would exercise the image cache
in a similar way to my Jabber client, but that would _not_ make it
crash.  Not sure what might be special about the way I do it.  Is there
any more information I could provide?
