In either its documention, the node Getting Connected in
...emacs/man/sc.texi, or in the Commentary in the source,
... emacs/lisp/mail/supercite.el, or better yet in both, Supercite
should say what to put in a .emacs file for Emacs 22.

At the moment, nothing is said, but the following is implied:

    (load "supercite")
    (setq mail-citation-hook 'sc-cite-original)

The documentation does not help a novice who knows nothing.  Doubtless
people who use Supercite will provide better text to copy.

The `load' should not be necessary.
And you should *never* *ever* use setq on a hook.  It's terribly bad for
your karma.  Use `add-hook' instead.

You are right.  For Emacs 22, it should only be necessary to put the
following in a .emacs file:

    (add-hook 'mail-citation-hook 'sc-cite-original)
