* Fly-spelling with multiple dictionaries

I would know if in Emacs-23 one can fly-spells using more than a single
dictionary. For example, I would to fly-spell my docs using italian and
english dictionaries in parallel.

Is this possible?

If yes, How?

If not, this should be a feature to add.

TIA,
    Angelo.

"speck" was an attempt to solve this and a couple of other problems I
encountered with flyspell. I didn't do any serious work on this for
more than a year, hence something might have broken in the meantime.
Also, full support for Ispell was never finished, Aspell support is more
reliable, IIRC. If you nevertheless want to give it a try - comments
very appreciated ;-)

The following choices are available:

None ......... Do not read or write multi-language information.

End of file .. Write multi-language information at end of file.

Standard ..... Intersperse multi-language information with normal text.

When you choose \"None\" no multi-language annotations are read even if
the file contains them. The other two options read annotations as they
are found on the file but differ in the way they write them out. The
\"Standard\" method puts strings \(\"<<speck-foo:\" and \"speck-foo>>\")
around every single stretch of text checked in the language \"foo\". If
these strings might confuse other applications operating on that file,
use the \"End of file\" method which puts all annotations on a single,
commented-out line at the end of the file.

Note 1: Neither \"Standard\" nor \"End of file\" will handle insertion
of parts of files into a buffer correctly. If you want to insert a
subsection of a file containing multi-language information it's strongly
recommended to visit that file in another buffer first and subsequently
yank the desired part(s) to the final target.

Note 2: The \"End of file\" method may fail to install multi-language
information properly if you decode a file differently than you encoded
it. Hence, if you want to preserve multi-language information when
switching to another coding system you should \(temporarily) use the
\"Standard\" method.

Note 3: Setting this option to \"Standard\" or \"End of file\" adds a
suitable entry to `format-alist'. Implicitly, this will add a
\(commented-out) line at file-beginning when writing the buffer to the
visited file. Resetting this option to \"None\" removes the entry from
`format-alist' but doesn't remove the line and the corresponding
annotations from the file until you explicitly save the buffer."

There's ispell-multi.el (and flyspell-babel.el) that were offered to us
to be integrated in Emacs, but it never happened. Someone needs to look
into what it would take to get these packages integrated. Interested?

Hi Martin,

very interesting approach. However, your mail arrived truncated (at
least at my account), so I couldn't actually run your code. Is
speck.el available somewhere to download?

Also, why do you no longer maintain/improve it? Do you use it yourself?

Sorry for those many questions, but they help me (and perhaps many
others) decide whether to install/try speck.el.

Thanks,
Claus

No. I'll send you another copy separately. Angelo just told me that it
throws errors when Ispell is not installed. I now fixed the offending
defcustoms on-the-fly. It might do strange things too when Aspell is
not installed, I apparently never cared about fixing them because I have
both installed.

I nearly forgot about it until I read Angelo's mail. I'm too lazy
to spell-check my texts - as you may have noticed already.

What is the difference against ispell-multi.el?

IIRC `ispell-multi' is a plug-in for ispell.el/flyspell.el. speck is
entirely self-contained, doesn't need ispell.el or flyspell.el.

speck is timer-based, scanning entire windows in the background.
flyspell runs spell-checking as some sort of post-command hook which
makes it quite sluggish on my system. That's why I decided to roll my
own spell-checker. The window-scanning, timer-based approach and the
region-based handling of languages are similar to what I found with
conventional word-processors. Moreover, speck allows to store language
information in files. Hence, you can switch off your machine and resume
spell-checking at a later point.

I admire Peter Heslin's work in this area. His programs are very
professionally written, I wish I could code his way. Parts of what
speck does resembles `ispell-multi' although I wasn't aware of his work
at the time I wrote speck. The one great deficiency of `ispell-multi',
IMHO, is that you need flyspell/ispell to run it. One great advantage
of `ispell-multi' are Peter's plugins for Babel and html (which I don't
need personally).

Thanks Martin.

So what's the best to do right now to get something like this into Emacs?

(Does ispell-multi use timers or post-command-hook?)

Elementary. Get people to experiment with the respective codes.

Peter's packages are quite small and can be included right away -
provided he has signed papers. His code is far superior to that of
flyspell.el.

If people want to experiment with my code they'll get all the support
they want. It's stand-alone and you can, for example, speck a buffer
with Aspell and have ispell check words with Ispell at the same time
(with different languages). You currently can't run flyspell and ispell
with different executables or languages simultaneously.

 > (Does ispell-multi use timers or post-command-hook?)

It won't care. When run with flyspell it obviously uses the
post-command-hook.

And how do we do this elementary thing, get people to test? ;-)

Maybe a page on EmacsWiki? Though I have tested sometimes and feedback
is coming very slowly - perhaps because I did not make the pages clear
or visible enough?

All I can do is offer my package when people ask for something like
this.

Spell-checking is a typical task for word processors - and they are very
successful doing this kind of job. The story of Ispell and Aspell, on
the other hand, is a rather sad one - IMHO.

Does any of the packages (yours, Peter's) define a clear API to
integrate other spell-checkers than Ispell/Aspell?

The OS may offer spell-checking facilities, and it would make for
better integration (and also better spell-checking in my case) if that
was supported.

Also note that modern text services go beyond spell-checking: grammar
checking, if done right, can be very helpful, too. If there was a
clear API, people could create the necessary components to integrate
such services.

Such an API should allow the service to spell-check more than one word
at a time, and it should define text filtering hooks so we don't pass
each \begin{itemize} to the spell-checker when in latex-mode. [If
there is such an API already, can you please point me to its
documentation?]

Ispell/Aspell are, to my knowledge, the only spell-checkers providing
the piping mechanism Emacs uses - Hunspell has a C(++) interface only.
Currently, all we do is send some buffer text to the spell-checker and
wait what the spell-checker tells us about that text.

IIRC integrating spell-checking wasn't that trivial with Open Office and
Thunderbird either - especially when using some European languages like
German.

Grammar checking can (and should, IMHO) be done separately from
spell-checking. Neither Aspell nor Ispell provide any support for this.

 > Such an API should allow the service to spell-check more than one word

That's what I do with speck, I send one line of text to the
spell-checker at a time. I don't want to send more since this might
interfere with typing.

 > and it should define text filtering hooks so we don't pass

Currently, Aspell and Ispell know better what should be ignored in LaTeX
buffers. Why duplicate work in this area?

 > [If

I'm not aware of such an API.

A C++ interface wouldn't be all that different. If the (elisp level)
spell-checking package provided clear separation between UI and
accessing the spell-checker (the API that I'd like), then support for
other spell-checkers could be implemented easily.

Yes. I think the UI portion could be the same, though. You underline
and provide a context menu, or you jump to the next warning.

That's indeed an argument in favor of A/Ispell; with other spell-
checkers, the major mode would have to strip out key words. And it's
really a major mode specific function and should be implemented there.

I don't understand why would you say something like that. FWIW, I'm a

The current state of technology for automated grammar checking is
still not very good. See these links, for example:

AFAIK, the only useful flavor of grammar checking that is available at
this time is based on data bases of bad or questionable phrases
expressed as regexps. These are, in effect, style checkers. See

  http://www.cs.umd.edu/~nspring/software/style-check-readme.html

Perhaps someone could implement something similar in Emacs Lisp?

I use both Ispell and Aspell for some years. Nevertheless, it's a sad
story of wasted resources. Ispell, Pspell, Aspell, Myspell, Hunspell is
like Emacs, XEmacs, YEmacs, ZEmacs, ...

I can't speak to the *spell issue, but there was (and is) no
alternative to maintaining a fork of Emacs that satisfies the
technical goals of the XEmacs developers and the Lucid developers
before them, because some of those technical goals (such as modularity
in code and in distribution) are unacceptable to GNU. It's not wasted
resources, therefore, although the burden imposed on third party
developers is unfortunate.

I suppose something similar is true of the *spell developers.

Why did you remove the - admittedly poor - pun from my original posting?
The last sentence read as

Ispell, Pspell, Aspell, Myspell, Hunspell is
like Emacs, XEmacs, YEmacs, ZEmacs, ...

and YEmacs, ZEmacs, ... do not exist.

You're talking to one of the persons who are convinced that Emacs and
XEmacs should (and do) profit from each other.

Agreed - if we were talking about Ispell and Aspell. Unfortunately,
development of these packages merely stalled and the newer ones like
Hunspell are hardly useful for Emacs (and XEmacs).

Such services ought to be provided by the host operating system, or
external (plugin) libraries, just like with aspell. A spell-checking
package in Emacs would handle the UI, and the UI for spell-checking
and style- and grammar-checking is very similar. Thus, providing a
proper API would allow people to interface all sorts of checking
functionality.

To give an example, I just wrote a 175+ page document over the last
months, and I implemented two things (very simple hacks):

- re-order sentences by length (in words), so the longest ones can be
evaluated and simplified manually
- terminology checker: e.g., ensure that compound nouns are spelled
consistently (e.g., hyphenated) throughout the document

Also, functions like checking subject-verb agreement would have come
in handy. Current parsing technology can most certainly do something
as simple as that.

A C++ interface wouldn't be all that different. If the (elisp level)
spell-checking package provided clear separation between UI and
accessing the spell-checker (the API that I'd like), then support for
other spell-checkers could be implemented easily.

It is a very bad idea to link other appls such as Aspell into Emacs.
It would cause constant maintenance trouble. So we definitely should
not do this.

That's not what I suggested. I was thinking of using documented and
stable APIs for spell-checking.

What I believe is missing now is a clear separation between UI and the
code that interfaces the spell-checker. ispell.el mixes UI, text
extraction ("skipping") and interfacing the backend.

FWIW: have a look at http://www.finseth.com/emacs.html
Not every of the more than 100 mentioned implementation will fully
qualify as "yet another Emacs implementation", but be assured there are
more than four...

... as an earlier user of EINE I am assured. But I'm not aware of any
Elisp package currently in use providing special support for anything
but XEmacs. The problem with Ispell, Aspell, and friends is precisely
that of finding people who write the special support for using these
programs (and their versions) from within Emacs (or XEmacs). Currently,
Emacs supports Ispell and, to a certain extent, Aspell. We do not (and
probably cannot) support Hunspell. If the current trend of replacing
Aspell by Hunspell on GNU/Linux based systems (Open Office, Firefox,
Thunderbird) continues, we will be eventually left with spell-checkers
that are hardly used and hardly supported.

Maybe they should, but since most of hosts OSes do not provide such
services now, I don't see why Emacs should wait for them.

When and if that happens, the pressure on Hunspell maintainers to
provide an Emacs-compatible interface will probably grow to a point
where they will, if by that time no one volunteers to contribute such
an interface.

So no need to tell you about Emacs history, eh? ;-)

It seems I got your original point wrong: I thought you were talking
about the doubled and tripled afford of having different implementations
of basically the same application.

Anyway, regarding the issue of hunspell: there is already a
ispell/aspell like command line interface included with hunspell
(including even tex, roff, sgml support). I had only a very short look
at it so I can't say how big the differences actually are, but I'm quite
confident that it will not take too much afford to integrate it with
Emacs just the way it has been done for ispell and aspell.

I just tested to build hunspell with Cygwin. I was not possible.

That would be a very welcome feature.

Because they don't exist, but SXEmacs and Aquamacs (to mention two
among several) do, and I assume the assorted *spells all do. I was
unsure of your intent, so I removed the parts that could cause
confusion (at least to me).

I'm also one, and therefore object to calling parallel development in
*friendly* competition a waste. I am sad that the GNU legal
requirements present a barrier to flow of code and to some extent
ideas from XEmacs to Emacs, but again that is a necessary outcome of
the difference in goals. (The same kind of thing is a feature of GPL
vs. BSD competition, of course.)

Well, I don't know about that. Again, the parallel to Emacsen fails.
While we long-time users have our strong preferences, for practical
purposes basic editing tasks are done the same in all the Emacsen.
(Eg, the tutorials are 95% valid across all Emacsen.)

In any case, we should think about what to do about this. Adapt
Emacsen? Adapt the new spell-checkers? Ignore them?

Thinking about it twice I probably was. The older I get apparently the
more I want things to stay as they are. It's getting difficult to adapt
myself to new and different implementations of what I'm using for years.

Could you have a slightly longer look at this and tell us how it could
be used? I didn't find anything about this at their site.

It was meant as a parallel to hypothetical, non-existing Emacsen. As a
parallel to Emacs and XEmacs it fails.

That's not what I suggested. I was thinking of using documented and
    stable APIs for spell-checking.

What's the difference? That looks like a different way of describing
the same thing. It is a very bad idea.

The interface between Emacs and Aspell is very stable, but what is
really important is that these two programs are NOT linked together.

Ok, I did some bold experimenting and simply made an ad hoc setup for
ispell like this:

(setq ispell-program-name "hunspell"
      ispell-local-dictionary "en_US"
      ispell-local-dictionary-alist '(("en_US" "[A-Za-z]" "[^A-Za-z]"
      "[']" nil nil nil iso-8859-1)))

then M-x ispell-buffer used hunspell as back end and worked as expected!
(Even a quick attempt to use flyspell succeeded.)

Very promising IMO. It seems that basically the dictionary setup must
be implemented for hunspell to work as back end for Emacs.

I guess there are a bunch of additional harry details which will need
fixing, but in general it seems that hunspell actually can be used as a
drop-in replacement for ispell with Emacs.

One problem seems to be, that in contrast to the manual page hunspell in
pipe mode does not handle lines starting with `~' like ispell -- in fact
currently I'm under the impression it doesn't handle them specially at
all...

I don't know how much of an problem this is -- I simply don't know
enough about the details of ispell, hunspell and Emacs ispell mode.

Shouldn't you use utf-8? I understand hunspell is Unicode based.

AFAIK it supports both. Being quite conservative I'm running my systems
configured for latin-1. I successfully tested hunspell with settings
similar to these and an german dictionary on an german, latin-1 Emacs
buffer including words with umlauts, so it definetly works.

To be true, I don't know how hunspell determinates which encoding to
use. For me it works with latin-1 and I haven't seriously tried to make
it use utf-8, yet.

Seems locale based. Using an original latin1 word,

$ echo camión | LANG=es_ES.ISO-8859-1 hunspell -d es_ES
Hunspell 1.1.9
*

$ echo camión | recode l1..utf8 | LANG=es_ES.UTF8 hunspell -d es_ES
Hunspell 1.1.9
*

$ echo camión | LANG=es_ES.UTF8 hunspell -d es_ES
Hunspell 1.1.9

IIRC, that handles the extended character mode. From ispell.el

EXTENDED-CHARACTER-MODE should be used when dictionaries are used which
have been configured in an Ispell affix file. (For example, umlauts
   can be encoded as \\\"a, a\\\", \"a, ...)

This has currently not meaning for aspell and hunspell, although none of them
complain about it for backwards compatibility. I have read somewhere that aspell
may have in the future support for some of those mappings (e.g., \'a -> á), but
do not know how that will be enabled.

But can be overriden from the command line
(documented in 'hunspell -h', not in the man page)

$ echo camión | LANG=es_ES.UTF8 hunspell -d es_ES -i ISO-8859-1
Hunspell 1.1.9

which is a different command line option than for aspell.

Thanks for the explanation, so this should be no problem with

Not in the manual? Argh...
Thanks for the hint.

So with the proper command line options we could user hunspell with
utf-8.
