what are 'common' and 'src' in the various rpm files?
I want to get an old fedora (eg fc2) to run on linpus

I'm spoiled because in recent wintel versions I only have to install one file

Debian, which I use, uses dpkg, and not RPM like Red
Hat and its sibling Fedora - however, 'src' does sound
like the the Elisp source (the corresponding emacs24-el
package on Debian) and 'common' sounds like
emacsen-common. You can use your package manager to
find out more, for example, in Debian, I type 'aptitude
show', and for emacsen-common, I read:

> Common facilities for all emacsen. This package

> packages. It will be automatically installed when

Thanks but part of my problem is that this unit is in "dependency hell" which
is the main reason I'm looking for the simplest old emacs to install.

I assume this means I should download everything that says emacs.

(The unit has no active wifi and further the repomd.xml file is out if date)

FC2? where would you find a repository for that?

Anyway, with Fedora:

yum install emacs

Who cares about your windows experience?

With Fedora you type one command or go into the GUI and click on the
module you want.

And you are running FC2?

You're out of luck. You might download and compile recent source, but
if you are missing one -devel package you are not going to get anywhere.

Whoa, be polite, especially to a guy who ask for help
installing Emacs :)

I am running Linpus (linpus.com)
Although I might run a diff linux, right now I can't
Linpus is a Fedora version for netbooks
Even when I had wifi I could not get repomd.xml to work
So I want a dependency-free rpm
That's why I went to fc2 or even fc1
Hoping back then they didn't create "dependency hell"

You will probably head for different problems this way with 10 year old
sw on current hw.

Have you checked (things like) this?
