make -C doc/lispref pdf
l.1202: Unicode char @u8:fi not defined for Texinfo
l.1206: Unicode char @u8:fi not defined for Texinfo
l.1207: Unicode char @u8:fi not defined for Texinfo
and indeed those characters are missing in the output PDF.
The message refers to the 3 instances of ligature "fi" in
strings.texi around line 1200, node "Case Conversion".
Versions:
RHEL 7.4
This is pdfTeX, Version 3.1415926-2.5-1.40.14 (TeX Live 2013)
makeinfo (GNU texinfo) 5.1
