Seems to work fine for me on GNU/Linux.
(setq default-indicate-buffer-boundaries 'left) works
(setq overflow-newline-into-fringe t) works

The moving around was mostly my doing. I don't think I moved anything
relevant to the fringe. The bitmaps are still defined in fringe.c
AFAICS.
