Just for the record: the directory-abbrev-alist is AFAIK only used by
abbreviate-file-name which is only called occasionally rather than
systematically (because its intention is to only make cosmetic changes).
So using it to map non-existent filenames to real filenames is likely to
lead to occasional surprises.
