I've used jka-compr for quite a while. It has worked without a
problem. Recently we converted to emacs 21.2.1, and now it just
doesn't work -- i.e. compressed files are not recognized. Any
debugging suggestions? I've checked -- it really is loaded.

See the doc string of the function auto-compression-mode. I'm
guessing that your .emacs file turns on jka-compr in a way that
worked with previous versions of Emacs, but does not work anymore
with the latest versions.

Hmm. I've always used jka-compr by putting

(require 'jka-compr)

in my .emacs -- is that not correct?

You mean you had (require 'jka-compr) work to turn on
automatic decompression. ell it doesn't work any more.
See C-h N for a (long) list of NEWS explaining what things like that
changed and how to get them to work again.
