That's almost always the case (e.g. linum.el, nlinum.el).
It's almost always impossible to provide a good replacement that is
really a strict superset (e.g. I tried to make `nlinum.el` a strict
superset of `linum.el` but that required very significant changes which
reintroduced some of the problems I wanted to get away from when
I decided to implement `nlinum.el`).
