emacs -q
dired with option `ls -1'
wdired-change-to-wdired-mode
reports error:
wdired-preprocess-symlinks: Search failed: " -> \\(.*\\)$"
Mode-line displays "(Editable Dired...)"
but when I start editing, it's refused saying:
call-interactively: Text is read-only
Thanks all
Andreas

You already have a problem here: dired doesn't work with this.
And indeed dired-listing-switches says clearly that the `l' option
is mandatory.

May the report be treated it as a feature request?
dired-listing-switches says `l' option is mandatory, but that's an inconvenience IMHO.
Encounter many occasions, a shorter display than `l' delivers is helpful. Just faster to look upon, edit etc.
Thanks
Andreas

As mentioned in an earlier message, there's `dired-virtual' for
such cases.

I don't see a need to keep open this particular report, which was marked
"wontfix" some time ago.
