It's really too bad that the simplest solution:
(setq mode-name '("C" c-submode-indicators))
isn't well supported (AFAIK in Emacs-CVS the only remaining problem is that
the help-echo, face, and mouse-face properties are overridden by the
ones applied generically to major mode name).
