Hard to believe the load goes high. But it probably thrashes wildly
because Bzr ends up using more than 500MB. That would also explain the
fact you can't login, which shouldn't be a problem with a high load.

Yes it would work just fine and be much faster. But since it's
compressed already, you can skip the first step.
