AFAIU the discussion between you and Stefan in bug#43572 stopped before > reaching such an agreement. My proposal was for a more ambitious new feature which would be used not just in the minibuffer but also in things like diff-mode or smerge-mode (to tell the redisplay that when we're in a hunk, it's a good idea to try and focus on that hunk). Such a new feature is well beyond the scope of your needs (and introduces a lot of open questions), so better ignore it at this point. I just hijacked this discussion because it reminded me of a need I've had in other contexts. Sorry 'bout that. Stefan
