Hi,

I am using emacs 21.1.1. with SuSE 8.0 and recently heard about the Big
Brother Database (BBDB) which emacs seem to support. Well, the address
mentioned in the FAQ seems to not exist, but anyway - and since I am not
soooo familiar with technique: Where do I get that and how do I install?

Thank you

ray

I know there is something really wrong with me asking this question on
this list but I am frustrated beyond belief. I have tried a lot and
read a lot (including the bbdb-info archives) before coming here with
this question:

Can someone please tell me how to build---it seems like there's some
sort of trick to it---BBDB from CVS? Believe me, I've read that webpage
and INSTALL file carefully a lot of times. Does someone know how to do
this?

Thank you.

Please indulge me,

BBDB's not one of those cumbersome, corner-use-case, libraries
is it?

Why isn't it included in GNU Emacs?

Does it belong in the ELPA?

It's here: git clone git://git.savannah.nongnu.org/bbdb.git

I'd love to include the new BBDB 3 in GNU Elpa, or yet better GNU Emacs.
The main obstacle for this is that while large portions of the BBDB code
have been re-written pretty much from scratch, there remains the
somewhat tedious task to go over the new code and check more carefully
which portions of the old code have remained and then either get
copyright assignments for these portions or replace them by something
else.

Volunteers welcome.

Roland

I'm less positive on this one for now.

Maybe the BBDB should just have its own ELPA repository until the
assignments are resolved? The GNU ELPA could have a new "external link"
index entry that points to another ELPA repository, making the user
experience seamless.

Lots of people use BBDB, right? So, if we sort out the copyright, why
not include it in Emacs?

We should handle this according to the policies we already have
for pointing at Emacs Lisp packages not distributed by us.

So, for now---to allow for the opportunity to do the work of sorting out
copyright---can we get BBDB 3 moved into GNU Elpa?

It's the other way around: the copyright needs to be sorted out in order
to be able to move BBDB into GNU ELPA.
