Usually it takes between a few minutes to a few hours to be able to use them (tho obviously, in limited ways). And then you learn more as your needs grow. And yes, you may keep learning new things about it for years, but that doesn't mean it takes years to be able to use them properly. "Writing a simple letter" is actually a very good first step in the use of LaTeX. Look for a template on the web, and do it. Stefan
