Removing the `end` argument is fundamentally wrong.  It's OK to play it
fast-and-loose and ignore that argument, but the function *should* keep
the buffer untouched after `end`.

                                                  ^^^^^^^^^^^^^
                                              (min end (match-end 1))

should do it.
